The town was divided into eleven school districts. Each of these districts received its proportion of the $2000 to be spent under the direction of a district Prudential Committee. This system continued for forty-five years, with the number of districts increasing to twenty-three. The inequality of school districts, the poor quality of schoolhouses, and other considerations led to the abolition of the district system in 1849.
