The Cape Ann earthquake occurred on November 18, 1755. A written account from the time claimed that it “shattered a great many chimneys in this town and in other towns.” A public fast was held on January 1, 1756.

According to modern analysis, the earthquake is estimated to have been between 6.0 and 6.3 on the Richter scale, still the strongest known in Massachusetts history.
