The fire occurred on February 18, 1864, and was discovered at 4 a.m. in a building occupied by the tailor Andrew Elwell, Jr. Fire engines from Danvers, Marblehead, and Boston, and the military company stationed at the fort on Eastern Point assisted in controlling the flames, but it was still considered the most destructive fire in the town’s history up to that point.
