At the outbreak of the war, Gloucester’s company of minute-men was disbanded, and men were encouraged to enlist for active service. Four companies were almost entirely composed of Gloucester men, and two others included several from the town. More than 225 soldiers from Gloucester participated in the first campaign of the war, both in the field and at sea.
