Around 1932, Erma Wheeler’s family inherited property on Pleasant Street in Rockport and she started spending summers on Cape Ann. Rockport artists including Samuel Hershey urged her to attend art school, so she enrolled in Art Students League in New York and the National Academy. She organized the 1937 Artists’ Ball with Jon Corbino, Samuel Hershey, Maurice Compris, and others.
