Wheeler’s art became increasingly abstract over her career, though it always maintained a reference to landscape. Each of her many periods had its own point of view, but they shared a rich and clear sense of color, a feeling for rhythm, and a masterful ability to stretch watercolor to the limits of its translucence. She died on April 8, 2005.
