Duveneck was a leading American painter who fell in love with East Gloucester. A beloved and inspiring teacher at the University of Cincinnati School of Design, he brought his students here, including Joseph DeCamp (1858 – 1923), Edward Potthast (1857-1927), Charles Corwin (1857-1938), Albert Fauley (1859-1919), and John Henry Twachtman. Many of these artists taught summer classes.
