Max Kuehne was born in Germany but emigrated to the United States with his family in the 1890s. He began his formal art training in 1907 when he enrolled in the New York School of Art and later the National Academy of Design.

Kuehne first visited Cape Ann in 1912, and later returned to Rockport during the summer of 1925, spending every summer here until he died. Although he was primarily known as a painter, he was also an accomplished wood carver.
