Coburn fell in love with Cape Ann when he visited artist Barbara Swan. During those years, he worked at the Mirsky Gallery in Boston. From 1957, Coburn worked in graphic design at MIT, his former architecture school. But Coburn was a painter, part of a group of artists in Boston, many from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, including Ellsworth Kelly, Bernard Chaet, and Ninon Lacey.
