In 1892, the author Rudyard Kipling met Dr. James Conland, who had grown up on Cape Cod and during his youth, had worked at sea with the Gloucester fishing fleet on the Grand Banks. Kipling was interested in Dr. Conland’s stories of the lives of fishermen and embarked on the research of the novel that became Captains Courageous. The story follows Harvey Cheyne Jr., the spoiled son of a railroad tycoon, who is saved from drowning by a Portuguese fisherman. Later, the book was adapted for film, TV, and the theater.
