John J. Babson’s History of the Town of Gloucester, Cape Ann, was published by Procter Brothers in 1860. The genesis of the work came from a suggestion by Dr. Ebenezer Dale at a Gloucester Lyceum lecture in 1830. The task of writing the history was taken up by William Ferson using town and colony records. Mr. Ferson had to set the work aside, and it lay unfinished until Mr. Babson completed the volume and published it in 1860.

Babson continued to research and revise for the rest of his life, so Notes and Additions to the History of Gloucester, Second Series: Early Records was published in 1891.
