In 1642 the town voted to prohibit settlement between what is now Revere Street and Halibut Point, to prevent further cutting of timber. In 1688, this area was opened up, allowing settlers to farm and cut a limited amount of wood. In the late 1600s and early 1700s, people began to move into the areas that now comprise Lanesville, Bay View, and Folly Cove.
