There was a rumor that the chime bells that were in the steeple of the Old North Chruch in Boston were sent originally by Gloucester, England, and intended to be received by Gloucester, Massachusetts. There was no concrete evidence that this was ever the case.

In 1915, City Clerk, John Somes wrote to the City Clerk in Gloucester, England, who confirmed that this was a rumor. In response, he gave the City of Gloucester three bells of varying sizes, some of which needed to be repaired to be used.
