The Centennial Avenue site was selected due to the fact that it was already city-owned land, centrally located, and large enough to accommodate a building housing 1,500 students. It was to replace the Dale Avenue site and cost $1.1 million. The cornerstone was laid in July 1939, and the finished building was dedicated on May 26, 1940.
