Gruppé was known for his impressionistic marine paintings. He was born in Rochester, New York to artist Charles Gruppé and Helen Elizabeth Mitchell Gruppé, although the family lived during his early years in the Netherlands as Charles was involved with the Hague School of Art. He studied at the Art Students’ League in New York City and started the Gloucester School of Art on Rocky Neck in 1929.
