The first recorded organized religious services on Cape Ann were led by Rev. Richard Blynman, from the time of arrival in 1642 until he left for New London in 1650. In his History of the Town of Gloucester, John Babson suggests that a new meeting house was built soon after the town was incorporated on the “Meeting House Plain,” or what was later known as the Green, although the exact date is unknown.
