During the Revolutionary War, Gloucester’s commerce and fishing were essentially shut down by British prohibitions against trade in the West Indies, and by the British seizure of American vessels and sailors on the open seas by its warships and privateers. The Treaty of Paris that ended the war also granted Gloucester fishermen the right to fish in the waters off of the British-controlled Maritime provinces, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador.
