1880Frederick Norman and George Thomas began their journey on the first double crossing of the Atlantic in the Little Western dory.Economy and Industry, Maritime & Fishing Industry

They departed from Gloucester on June 12, 1880. A crowd of 30,000 spectators gathered to see them off. They arrived at Cowes on the Isle of Wight on July 28, 1880, then stayed in England for a year before they started the return trip in 1881.
