Sargent Edmund Cronin and three patrolmen scoped out a possible liquor smuggling scheme after finding an idling speedboat at Cooney Wharf. The boatman defied the police order to shut off the engine and disembark and instead fled the scene under a hail of bullets. Later, the police identified the local man, John Grillo, as the boatman. They went to his home and found illegal liquor.
