Work began on the Hammond Castle in July 1926 and the Hammonds moved in in March of 1930. Contrary to popular belief, Hammond did not build the castle for his wife, Irene.

The castle was built from designs by Allen, Collins, and Willis to resemble a 12th-century tower, a 14th-century refectory, a court of 15th-century houses, and a Roman pool.
