The party of friends, including the President’s brother, spent time aboard the private yacht of the Secretary of the Navy George Von L. Meyer and at the range at Dogtown Common. The visit took place on October 5, 1912.

Merit P. Alderman taught Helen how to use an Army rifle and she scored 49 out of 50 points at the Government rifle range, making her a qualified marksman.
