The Blackburn Building was located at 289 Main Street. Howard Blackburn, the ultimate fisherman hero in Gloucester, opened a cigar store and applied for a liquor license to turn the business into a saloon. His business alternated between being known for “soft drinks” or as a “saloon” based on the changing limits imposed by Prohibition. Blackburn owned the business until his death.

City Council ordered that Dogtown be registered in accordance with Chapter 562 of the acts of 1898.

Artist John Twachtman (1853-1902) summered in Gloucester and organized an acclaimed art exhibition at Rockaway Hotel on Rocky Neck, where he lived that summer.
