James Babson received 32 acres of land in the area known as Beaver Dam. He built a cooperage shop, which sold barrels that were used to transport fish from Good Harbor Beach to the West Indies and Europe. In 1931, the building reopened as the James Babson Museum during a Babson family reunion event.
