Born on June 15 to William and Mary (Griffin) Babson, John James Babson was their third child and eldest son. His mother’s family was one of the early colonists at Annisquam. His father’s family settled in Gloucester around 1637.

Babson is probably best known as the author of the books History of the Town of Gloucester, Cape Ann, and Notes and Additions to the History of Gloucester. He also served on the School Committee for three decades and was twice Superintendent of Schools. He served on the Gloucester Lyceum’s Board of Directors, and as a Trustee of the Sawyer Free Library, and was a member of the Massachusetts Historical Commission. He was employed as a cashier at the Gloucester Bank and was Bank Commissioner of Massachusetts in 1864-65.
