Winthrop sailed on the Arbella in a fleet of 16 ships, carrying between 700 and 1,000 colonists, livestock, and the royal charter for the Massachusetts Bay Colony. On the 11th of June, Winthrop notes in his journal being in sight of Cape Ann. Several of the passengers “went on shore upon the land of Cape Ann, which lay very near us, and gathered store of fine strawberries.” On the morning of the 13th, “the sagamore of Agawam [Masconomet], along with one of his men came aboard our ship and stayed with us all day.” (Winthrop, 26-27)
