Hartley tried to paint commercial still lifes, but could not keep himself out of the art enough for the commercial market. He was distracted by worries and wrote in mid-July about Dogtown, “I had lived it over in my imagination so intensely that the thing looked like nothing when I got here.” In the fall, he destroyed hundreds of paintings to cut down on his storage costs.
