When the Constitution was written in 1780, slavery was legal. During the years 1781 to 1783, the verdict in three related legal cases known as the “Quock Walker Case” gave the Supreme Judicial Court the authority to abolish slavery, which as an institution was considered incompatible with the new state constitution.
