Bruen came to Gloucester from Plymouth with Reverend Richard Blynman. He was made a freeman (a person who could vote and own land) in 1642. He served as selectman for several terms, and town clerk until 1650, when he left for New London. He took the town early town records with him and sent an abridged copy back in 1650.
