The church, unique in Gloucester for its mission-style architecture, contains the first carillon bells to be installed in the United States. It has been ” the focus of the ethnic community of Portuguese,” by carrying on “many of the ‘Old Country’ ceremonial and traditional rites.” (National Register of Historic Places)
