Painting was an avocation for Gloucester native Addison Center, though he was listed as one of the three artists here in 1858. He was an officer in the Civil War and then became active in Republican politics. He served two terms in the State Legislature and as deputy collector of customs for the Port of Gloucester for almost 20 years. Center painted portraits, still lifes, landscapes, marines, and portraits. He often worked from photographs. His style was formal, solemn, and quiet, possibly due to his use of photographic source material.
