The program started in the fall of 1973 with Jim Schoel appointed as the head and David S. Wise as the advisor. It was based on the Outward Bound programs and incorporated into the regular 10th-grade curriculum.

According to the Course Expectations sheet given to students: “Our goals for you are to function as an effective individual within a group and also independently, through the sharing of experiences and communication about them.”
