2003Regional fishing regulators chose the Northeast Seafood Coalition’s plan for rebuilding fish stocks to serve as the basis for the new rulesEconomy and Industry, Maritime & Fishing Industry

The coalition plan presented to the New England Fishery Management Council was crafted by the local dragger fisherman Vito Giacalone and proposed giving fishermen a new category of fishing days to divert fishing from weak to healthy stocks. This option would try to blunt the predicted losses of $12-$35 million in sales and 185-559 jobs.
