In April of 1914, the polishing mill at Rockport Granite Company burned in a fire. In response, the company requested that a ladder service be implemented in Ward 7, where their company was located to prevent further fires in the area. According to the plea to City Council and the Mayor, it took the fire department over 40 minutes to arrive in Bay View to help put out the fire at their mill, which completely destroyed it.
