Sacred Heart Church was built between 1876 and 1878. At the time, Lanesville was becoming more populated due to the rise of the granite industry, which employed immigrant groups including Irish Catholic families fleeing their home country. When Saint Ann Church started in 1855, the priest held monthly mass at Lanesville’s Village Hall until St. Joachim Church was built in Rockport, so many Catholic families walked there for weekly mass. By 1875, there was enough interest in constructing a Catholic church in Lanesville. Eleven men, all Irish immigrants who worked as stonecutters at Lanesville Granite Company, donated $100 each for the construction of the church and built the foundation themselves.
