The brick lighthouse was originally built in 1821 and rebuilt in 1881. In 1956 the Coast Guard decommissioned it, using an automated foghorn and small signal light instead. The Lighthouse Preservation Society initiated the restoration of the lighthouse, with the light being relit. Further renovations to the only remaining original structure, the oil house, were planned.
