Ocean-effect snow resulted in up to 30 inches of accumulation, and high winds up to 50 miles per hour created drifts of up to 8 feet. Whiteout conditions resulted in many car accidents, stranded motorists, and eventually the shutdown of Route 128. Mayor John Bell declared a state of emergency and requested help from the National Guard to clear roadways for emergency vehicles.
