The monument was dedicated on September 11, 1879, which was observed as a holiday. There was a procession that included military companies and Grand Army posts from across the state, guests, veteran soldiers, department officers of the Grand Army of the Republic, the fire department, various organizations, and bands from all over Massachusetts.
