The name Dabsville was based on an acronym of the original group members and grew to include notable Gloucester residents Cecilia Beaux, A. Piatt Andrew, and Henry Sleeper. Art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner was an honorary member of the group.

Dabsville provided a place for those who were considered “other” by societal norms at the time to socialize together, as many were unmarried and would be considered queer in today’s world.
