The first large Gloucester fishing vessel to be equipped with an auxiliary engine was the Helen Miller Gould, launched in March 1900. It was equipped with a 150-horsepower gasoline engine to supplement the sail power. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire at North Sydney, Cape Breton on October 26, 1901.
