City Hall was a popular event space after it was constructed in 1871. It was rented for entertainment, concerts, circuses, and other big events in town. The first public movie show was on January 31, 1900, and included a reproduction of the James J. Jeffries and Tom Sharkey fight on Coney Island on November 3, 1899. The fight yielded the first motion picture filmed under artificial light.
