1987The Fishermen’s Institute was incorporated at their new location on Main Street.People and Communities, Economy and Industry, Maritime & Fishing Industry, Local Organizations
A dozen years after the original Fishermen’s Insitute was demolished by urban renewal, a second-floor suite of three rooms on Main Street was opened for retired and transient fishermen to socialize and grab a meal. Originally located next to the original police station on Duncan Street, the new quarters no longer offered dormitory beds but allowed the nearly 100-year-old organization to continue supporting the needs of aging fishermen. During the years when the Institute lacked quarters, annual gatherings were arranged at local restaurants, like Captain’s Courageous, to create opportunities for its dwindling membership to socialize and swap stories.
