With the founding principle, “the improvement of its members in useful knowledge, and the advancement of popular education,” the Gloucester Lyceum brought a forum for new ideas and promoted culture to the growing middle class. First held in Union Hall, then Town Hall, lectures by both local leaders as well as authors, statesmen, and orators were attended by hundreds of community members.
