The Hebrew Ladies Aid Association stated their purpose as, “promoting the general welfare, uplifting the minds, morally, intellectually and socially, of the Jewish community in Gloucester and environs; helping, aiding, assisting and encouraging deserving and worthy people, primarily those of Jewish affiliation, by giving or loaning the money without interest or charge; in general, rendering help or assistance to the worthy and needy within the power and scope of this organization; establishing and maintaining a place for a reading room, a library and social meeting rooms.” (Dunlap, 21)
