The Huntress Fund in the amount of $33,505 was left to the city by Joseph F. Huntress of Boston. An ordinance from the Mayor and the Board of Alderman gave the authority to establish a board of trustees, which consisted of the Mayor, the President of the Common Council, one Alderman, two Common Councilmen, and four citizens at large. The fund would later be used to establish a home for impoverished women in 1889.
