Martell dove into the ocean on December 20, 1962. The water temperature was cold enough to cause death within 10-15 minutes. Unfortunately, although he reached Miller, the seas were too rough to hold on to him.

Martell was the first to receive the medal twice, as he had also been awarded it in 1959 as part of the crew of the Saint Nicholas.
