The survey included all female and male enslaved people over the age of sixteen. Although it is considered incomplete, with many towns and enslavers not included, the 1754 survey listed 2,270 slaves in Massachusetts, 442 slaves in Essex County, and 61 slaves in Gloucester. This made Gloucester the fourth-largest slave-owning town in Massachusetts.
