A group of eleven men organized the Master Mariners’ Association as “a purpose born of good-fellowship and a desire for social intercourse and fraternization.” The organization was a powerful factor in the fishing industry of the North Atlantic. They fought for legislation for fishermen’s rights in both Boston and Washington D.C., initiated or sponsored regulations for the improvement of fishery conditions, and worked for a higher standard of quality and uniformity in trade practices.
