Charles Sanders bequeathed $10,000 to both Gloucester and Cambridge to establish temperance funds. The interest on the funds was to be used as salary for “a missionary in the cause of Temperance in reforming old drunkards and preventing young drunkards.” The position of Temperance Missionary was filled by various men throughout the next few decades.
