The company had the vessel built to alternate with the George A. Chaffee. On the maiden voyage on July 27, 1883, the Gloucester Cornet Band provided entertainment and Johnny Morgan catered the event, but the sea was so rough that it had to turn back at Half Way Rock. The City of Gloucester made its last run to Boston on July 18, 1925.
