The first mill at this location was built in 1652. The Reverend John Emerson had promised to operate the mill he bought in 1664 at Fox Hill, but apparantly this plan never materialized. Now the demands upon the mills had increased sufficiently that the town decided to build a larger cornmill in Riverdale, and Emerson agreed to move his operation there.
